On this course we will look at some of the most famous poets in the English language.
We will examine contemporary figures as well as poets from earlier historical periods
such as Shakespeare. Romantic poetry of the 19th century and First World War poets,
Patrick Kavanagh, W. B. Yeats, Seamus Heaney amongst others. We will discuss the
influences and cultural background to their poetry and the literary techniques in their
work. The emphasis will be on enjoying and appreciating poetry and individual
poems will be examined and the various aspects of them including imagery, rhythm,
music, metaphor and theme will be studied to show how the poet has expressed his
innermost personal self, his intimate and profound experiences through his poetry, to
quote the Romantic poet, Wordsworth “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful
feelings” or Keats who said “if poetry does not come like the leaves on the trees it had better
not come at all”.
